I replaced my 100-400 with a 70-200 II + 2x TC - well more precisely I upgraded my 100-400 to the Sigma 120-300 Gabe mentioned, and upgraded my 70-200 Mk1 to a Mk2 to replace the 100-400 as the travel kit since the Sigma is much less travel friendly.
IQ wise it is very good. 'Close enough' (but not better) to what my reasonably good 100-400 put out. Biggest gripes are the absolute rubbish AF performance vs. even the relatively slow 100-400, and compactness of the 100-400; in the sense it collapses into 70-200 size that most bags can take. Putting on and off TCs is an annoyance I didn't factor into my upgrade plans.
As a part time 400mm it does the job very well.
A lot of my pics on my Flickr are with the 70-200 and some sort of TC, but at web sizes probably not that useful to judge quality.
